Reflection Blog #1

This week’s reading was all very interesting, and made me look back at my own life and compare it. While I was reading “The Identity Dance,” it made me think that just because someone looks a lot alike; it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are one and the same. I wonder if they have ever done a research on just sisters. It makes me look back on my relationships with my siblings. We are all different ages yet we are all very much the same. We all took up nursing and are very caring people, and think very similarly among other things. To me DNA is just a fraction of what plays a role in who we are today. I look at it as if DNA is where I come from, and then life is what truly shapes us. The other thing that really got me thinking is the continuity vs. discontinuity. I find that I have stayed the same since I was a little girl. I love staying inside and enjoying things on my own, while one of my sisters have turned more of an extrovert. I would love to know more about what is means to share DNA, and why don’t we all experience life’s circumstance in the same way? I want to always remember that we all think, learn, and process differently.

  1. I agree that DNA is only a portion of who and what we become but it does give us the building blocks to start our foundation from. Some of those building blocks make it easier or more difficult to be able to deal with what life throws at us. I think what you said about you and your sisters is a great example of the nurture perspective as you were all raised in a similar matter with the similar foundation of genes.

  2. I like your end thought! I find that in my own life I need to remember too that everyone thinks and feels differently. So while an action may seem frustrating or silly to me, it very well may come from some deeper learned reaction based on that individuals history. I think that if all of society could keep this in mind it would go a long way towards creating a more accepting, caring society!

  3. The article also made me think about myself and my siblings, we grew with loving parents and tried to treat us all the same well as best you can with boys and a girl. And we all turned out with very different personality's. It is crazy to think that people so closely connected can turn out so different.

  4. I think that is a great way to look at it, DNA is what makes us, life is what shapes us. My brother and sister's personalities are so different than mine it makes me wonder where they get it from since we all grew up together. However, just like you said, we all interpret, process, and learn things differently.
